In the meantime we are used to getting up early. After breakfast we left for the Winery nearby Wellington. James Mc. Kenzie welcomed us on his winery, followed by a guided tour along the vineyards. The first wine made on this winery was in 1712.
On the right side of the vineyards, the Limiet Mountain is situated. This mountain thanks its name to put a stop to the VOC-ers as a limitline from getting them into the inner lands.
On the left side of the building, the Green Mountain is located. This mountain is named after the volcanic eruption on vegetal fertility, granite and sand. These elements provides good drainage and contain a water permeable capacity.
The adjacent valley is called the Bovlei, where the Merlot-grape grows well on rocky and red earth.
We also have experienced a wonderful wine tasting, which of course cannot be missed during our visit to the Winery. The wine tasting started with a ‘’Lady Anna’’ based on Chenin Blanc (75%), Sauvignon Blanc (20%) and Semillon (5%) from Vintage 2010. It was a medium and intense wine with the taste of green melon, papaya and citrus fruit and with a slight crisp in the after taste. Also Chenin Blanc 1712, 2009 was juicy, fresh and with a taste of exotic fruit and viscosity in length.
Before I started the BBQ, I enjoyed a wonderful glass of Bordeaux Blend 2006. A lovely intense wine with a characteristic structure, and with a taste of warm ripe fruits. During the BBQ we got to taste different dishes. Sausage seasoned with Moroccan spices, drum sticks, a nice piece of beef with a crispy lipi barrier and fried potatoes. The wine was well fitted by all the dishes that were served.
Satisfied and with the nostalgia from Wellington, we returned to Cape Town for the football game. Onno Kokmeijer will tell you something more about this, so I will give the floor to my colleague Onno.
With vinous regards,
Noël Vanwittenbergh
Today Capetown is tinted Orange, Dutch and South African fans came to the Fan-Zone. From here a long procession walked towards the Green point Stadium for the game of The Netherlands and Cameroon.
Before we left for the Fan-Zone, we took care of the Pre match of the KNVB (Dutch Football Organization). All the VIPS were invited for this reception and together with Ron Blaauw I prepared 4 appetizers, inspired on the African ingredients, served with African wines.
After the opening speech of Henk Kessler we prepared and served the appetizers. All the guests enjoyed the wines in combination with the appetizers. Afterwards it was time for us to leave and prepare our self for the match of The Netherlands and Cameroon.
This was a unique moment for me, seeing all the Orange supporters moving towards the stadium. And what an experience to watch a World Cup match so close! With the thoughts in mind, that the Netherlands already passed to the Eight Final, I was watching the game very relaxed.
Baie Groet from the Culinary Orange supporters,
Onno Kokmeijer
