Sout-Africa part 4

After the successful opening of the ‘Neil Ellis’ winery in the Alexander Valley, we left early the next morning for another day filled with culinary experiences. The sun shine promised that this would be another wonderful day. The sky was bright and the Table Mountain, with its imposing appearance, was beautifully silhouetted against the sky.

Today started early, as we left to Swartland to cook for 250 children with the Culibus. One and a half hours later we arrived in Swartland, under the supervision of a police escort. Junctions and roundabouts were locked to give our Culibus precedence and in Swartland even whole streets were closed upon to our arrival. This must have looked impressive, so this morning the whole village was on the streets to welcome us. It felt like the Dutch Soccer team came to visit Swartland, it was again a very special experience!

The children in Swartland participated in a football league and I prepared a culinary 3 course lunch for the children together with Hans van Wolde, Henk Savelberg and the chefs from the Culibus. The menu consists of a vegetable bouillon, followed by a hamburger and for dessert we served a fruit salad. It was a beautiful seeing how happy these children were by this gesture, but on the other hand it was also emotional. After a word of thanks the minister and even the major of Swartland, we continued our journey to Paarl.

In Paarl we cooked a diner at the Orange campsite for 450 persons. We prepared a stew of potatoes, rocked lettuce and sundried tomato. The stew was a hit. During the day it was 28 degrees but in the evening the temperature cooled down to 2 or 3 degrees, so the stew was popular.

Tomorrow we are going to take care of the reception of the KNVB before the game of the Netherlands and Cameroon in Capetown. After the reception, we all go to the stadium where we watch the game together.

Regards from sunny South-Africa,
